Viktor Frankl was born in Vienna (26.03.1905). He was a holocaust survivor and an eminent psychiatrist and neurologist. He founded logotherapy, the “Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy”. He died on September 2, 1997, aged 92. Man’s Search for Meaning was named one of the 10 most influential books in the US. Viktor Frankl’s books have achieved over 16 million copies in sales to date and had been translated into 50 languages.
“We must never forget that we may also find meaning in life even when confronted with a hopeless
situation, when facing a fate that cannot be changed. For what then matters is to bear witness to the
uniquely human potential at its best, which is to transform a personal tragedy into a triumph, to turn
one’s predicament into a human achievement. When we are no longer able to change a situation-just
think of an incurable disease such as inoperable cancer-we are challenged to change ourselves”.
- On Choice: “Everything can be taken from a person but one thing: the last of human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances”.
- On Suffering: “In some way, suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds a meaning, such as the meaning of a sacrifice”.
- On Life’s Question: “We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life—daily and hourly”.
- On Purpose: “The more one forgets himself—by giving himself to a cause to serve or another person to love—the more human he is and the more he actualizes himself”.
- On Action: “Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual”.
- On Love: “The truth—that love is the ultimate and highest goal to which man can aspire”.
